Energy Department Announces Funding for U.S. Critical Mineral Production

Critical Minerals Rare Earth
The funding supports pilot projects and new technology testing sites to strengthen U.S. mineral supply chains.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $355 million in new funding opportunities to expand domestic production of minerals essential to energy, manufacturing, transportation, and defense. Up to $275 million will be awarded to pilot projects that recover critical materials from coal-based resources and other industrial byproducts, while an additional $80 million will support the “Mine of the Future—Proving Ground Initiative,” where next-generation mining technologies can be tested in real-world conditions.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Assistant Secretary Kyle Haustveit said the efforts are intended to strengthen the nation’s mineral supply chains, reduce dependence on foreign sources, and support workforce development in mining communities.

“We have these resources here at home… we are reversing that trend, rebuilding America’s ability to mine, process, and manufacture the materials essential to our energy and economic security,” said Secretary Wright.

“The Mine of the Future – Proving Ground Initiative will be among the Department of Energy’s first major investments into mining technology research and development in almost four decades,” said Assistant Secretary Haustveit of the Office of Fossil Energy. “This effort will help establish the United States as the world’s leading producer and processor of non-fuel minerals.”

The department noted that selected projects will also facilitate hands-on training for future miners and engineers.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Wright and Assistant Secretary Haustveit as they oversee the evaluation of projects for domestic mineral production.
  • For U.S. energy officials as they assess the applicants for the development of critical mineral resources.
  • For governing officials at the federal and state levels as they collaborate with industry leaders and researchers on the testing and implementation of new technologies across the country.
